So, a Cardinal claimed the recent revelations of decades of child abuse in the Catholic Church were due to the Devil infiltrating the Church. Well, to paraphrase Brand New, in my opinion the Devil and God are raging inside each of us. I don’t mean literally; that’d be a tight squeeze. We all have the capacity for great evil and great compassion but to blame these atrocities, and their subsequent burial by the Church and possibly even the current Pope, on a fictional boogeyman is an insult to the victims (past, present and future). If it turns out that Pope Bene was involved in the protection of paedophiles then I have no idea how the Catholic Church, with a straight face, can continue to claim this man is the number one spokesman for their God and has the final word on all elements of their faith.
